Arthur's Snow Day

Schools out...schools out...

FINALLY...winter has arrived.  Not winter as in the arctic blast of Siberian temperatures we've had over the last couple of days (we broke a record low last night), but winter as in snow.  Yep...the white stuff.  I'm not a snow lover, but is surely is beautiful tonight.  We had a snow dusting the other day and then some wind which blew it around in little piles and then Saturday we had some WIND.  This WIND created a sandstorm (because there was no snow), which in turn covered everything in ugly brown dirt... cars, windows, porches, house, etc.  Even the Wagoners complained that our dirt had blown over to them (not kidding).  Now these amazing big snowflakes are coming straight down and our little world looks beautiful again.  No school for the past two days for Warsaw due to the extreme cold (I might add that it was business as usual for the Warriors). Maybe with a little luck and some extra snow, we'll have a school closing tomorrow (Wednesday) and I'll feel like a kid again with a snow day of my own.  A sweet midweek reprieve from 15 screaming little munchkins.  One can hope --while crossing their fingers.  I'll let you know if the finger crossing worked.   ~chao

regular or ala carte?

I'm still thinking about yesterday's lunch.  Not that Sunday lunch isn't normally memorable, it's just that yesterday's included a bit of nostalgia.  We had beef and noodles that had been in the freezer -- now at first glance that might not seem so special.  However, something magical happened as the temperature dropped and those wide noodle yummys settled down into their juices for a (short) winters nap.  As I tasted the first steaming bite mixed with my scoop of creamy instant mashed potatoes and followed with my white bread and butter, all I was missing was my cold carton of chocolate milk.  Those beef and noodles had transformed into a cafeteria delicacy.  There's something to be said for school lunch -- I know it.  My sisters know it.  I feel a sort of sadness for those who don't.  I know there are others who feel the same as me...

No news is good news.

There is nothing new to report.  That's good, I guess, in a cup-half-full sort of way.  No car trouble, no fleeing fugitives, and no funny quips from my little boy.  It's too cold (for me) to leave the house under less than necessary circumstances, so I am resigned to sit at home reading Budget Travel and watching Reality TV.  I've now seen the first episode of Rob and Amber Against the Odds three times.  FINALLY, episode two has come on.  I'm pathetic.  We did go to Lunker's last Friday for dinner.  I ate yummy fried clams...best I ever had (ma'am, hardly any rats.)  It was a fun time--Jack says he "really likes that place."

That's all for now..

The Very Best of Cat Stevens

Here...kitty, kitty.

Tony the Cat moved in yesterday.  It seems to be okay, although he is relentlessly stalking Kitty Lou.  Yep, stalking.  Tony follows him from a 3-foot distance everywhere he goes.  Occasionally, Lou will turn and lunge at Tony, at which time Tony will run away momentarily.  As soon as Lou's back is turned, Tony comes back to his 3-foot perimeter.  There's a lot of low gutteral meowing being exchanged and a few hisses (but some of those have been exchanged between Tony and Jack.  Jack thinks it's funny that Tony answers him.)

There is some irony in this whole new houseguest situation.  See, Lou goes crazy trying to get outside if a neighborhood cat comes into the yard.  Loudly meowing, pacing the windows, etc.  However, now that we've brought the "neighborhood cat" inside it's not so much fun.  Well, it's fun for Jack.

He's really trying to make friends with the new guy since Kitty Lou won't give him the time of day.  Instead of "cheese" he said "I love you, Sarah" as we took this picture.

and the Award goes to....

So the Golden Globes were last night....everyone was there.  I watched the whole thing and it was actually pretty good except every camera pan seemed to land on Renée Zellweger.  (That was a little annoying, but maybe (like me) the cameraman is still trying to figure out the whole Kenny thing.)  Anyway, I've got a lot of comments so first I'll start with a few of the actors:

  • the Jolie-Pitts -- GORGEOUS! Papa looked fine although Angie looked a little frightened on the red carpet and maybe could stand to eat just a bit more. There was some minor PDA.
  • Reese -- so cute! sporting extentions? and bangs.  Ryan's an idiot.
  • America Ferrera -- I just wanted to hug her.  She was so excited to be there and then she won comedy best actress and couldn't stop crying.  She looked beautiful.
  • Salma Hayek looked good, but the ladies may have been pushed up just a little too high.  She cried when America received her award.  It was a touching moment all around.
  • Meryl Streep gave her speech for Devil Wears Prada in little librarian glasses and said she was sure she'd worked with everyone in the room.  I love her!
  • Warren Beatty won the Cecil B. DeMille award and I must say he's aged very well.  Annette Benning just glowed beside him.  I'm pretty sure she was wearing a phony pony.
  • Renée -- I don't know how she sees through those squinty little eyes!  and her chipmunk cheeks were especially shiny.  What is it with her anyway?
  • Ben Affleck and Alec Baldwin obviously had the same hairdresser who intended for them to appear three inches taller.
  • Kate Winslet and Drew Barrymore looked lovely albeit similar.
  • Leo looked a little lonely sans Giselle.  (I think he still misses her!) but Scorsese paid him a really nice compliment in his speech for The Departed.
  • Penelope got a little camera action and can I just say eeeewww!  Matthew should be ashamed of himself for ever going there.
  • George Clooney -- ahhhhh.  need I say more?

Now a few general observations:

  • Ugly Betty beat out the Office.... just throwing a bone to the new girl perhaps?
  • Babel won best picture, but alas that fine, fine piece of man candy never went to the stage.
  • Jamie Foxx gave a shout out to several people in the audience as he was presenting.  But only black people.  It was very obvious and awkward.  Will and Jada looked a little uncomfortable.
  • The Donald was there.  Why??
  • Over 50% of the people at the Awards had a foreign accent. Hence the Hollywood Foreign Press?
  • The interviews on E afterward were NOT GOOD.

as a complete side note, I was watching Wildfire last night and a new character was introduced.  I'm watching thinking, this bullrider with the smoldering eyes and smooth southern drawl seems really familiar to me.  It was midway through the show before I realized it was Rex...as in Rex and Mimi.  It's amazing the difference a black cowboy hat and a different network can make. <....feelin' hot...hot...hot.>
